Picture this... A Gypsy sitting in the sacred space within her home in the middle of the wilderness. Horses nearby that would normally pull the home are woken from their sleep by an approaching man. The stranger enters the wheeled cabin and is hit with the odor of something cooking - or is that incense? Strange artifacts and trinkets precious to her are strewn about everywhere. The Gypsy holds her hand out and accepts the arranged payment from this stranger who came to see her in the night. Gazing into her crystal ball she begins to relay events of a time past, giving her credence and this stranger validation to her visions. She continues....
It's amazing and has been somewhat made fun of in modern times, but the art of Crystal Ball gazing is just one of a larger practice. Scrying is the act of gazing into any reflective surface or shifting pattern and obtaining details using your intuitive senses and the 3rd eye in conjunction with your natural sight. These obtained details and information may concern past/present or future events. Scrying has also been used to find lost items or people. It is a method of opening up and accessing the energies that are already naturally connected to you.
Scrying comes from the English word 'descry' meaning 'to make out dimly' or 'to reveal' and has been used as far back as 3000 B.C. in China and 2500 B.C. in Egypt. Examples of materials used for scrying are crystal balls (quartz, obsidian and selenite for example), mirrors (usually black paint, not silver, on the back of glass - photo above), a dark bowl with water in it, a body of water out in nature, flames, incense/firepit smoke and clouds to name a few.
Softly staring into any of these, and relaxing not only your vision, but your mind, can yield some awesome results. Common symbols, such as clouds within, or floating above, crystal balls and mirrors are seen. Other symbols must be deciphered on a personal level so it's good to record the findings.
What follows is a simple method of scrying. All in all, do it in a manner that is comfortable with you - so take these as guidelines. As with anything using clairvoyance, it takes practice, patience, clear and positive intent. If you find you are having a 'bad day', or feel this isn't for you, please do not attempt. Allow yourself to be in a positive, uplifting mood and positive results are sure to follow!
Instructions:
If you'd like to create your own mirror, there are enough websites that have instructions around. Do a search for 'creating scrying mirror' or the like.
As with any practice of intuitive nature. Relax and be patient with yourself. Getting frustrated simply muddies up or confuses the energies. When I began studying divination, If I were to get 'hits' (that is positive results), I would always get excited to the point of knocking myself out of the loop and having to start over - this is where relaxation and meditative practices comes in handy. It is said it takes 21 days of consistency to create a habit. Start meditating 20 minutes a day now - what are you waiting for?! ;)

Instructions:
- Get, or create, a scrying mirror (a regular mirror may be used in a pinch) or a crystal of decent size.
- Place the scrying surface so that it reflects nothing (angled so it reflects a blank wall or ceiling - not you or objects in the vicinity)
- Sit at a comfortable distance from the object and perform a full body relaxation with eyes closed (start from the toes, flex them then relax, repeat with the heels, flex then relax - follow through all the way to the top of your head including arms/hands) Allow this to take as long as necessary, but approximately 15-20 minutes should be plenty.
- You may say a prayer appropriate to you. Ask for protection and/or guidance from above if it feels like the right thing to do for you.
- Think of your question or what it is your looking for. Be as clear as possible in your thoughts.
- Softly stare into the object - that is, focus into the mirrored surface but you need not do this until your eyes water. You may allow your focus to wander and you may blink - don't torture yourself. Try to maintain relaxation throughout.
- Above all, relax during the experience. You may not get anything your first few attempts.
- When you begin to see the symbols or images, it may be handy to have a audio recorder going so you can explain what you see while maintaining eye contact - though many have stated that they write things down and that they don't break out of the vision when writing and looking back.
- Once done, whether or not successful, close your eyes and, if it feels right to you, say a prayer thanking the powers that be.
